Man Utd ‘Could Scrap’ Controversial £200M Roof In New Old Trafford Plans

Manchester United’s plans for their new stadium are again in the spotlight, with new reports claiming that an impressive new roof, estimated to cost over £200 million, could be scrapped.

Last year, the Red Devils presented plans for a new 100,000-seater stadium after preferring to leave Old Trafford rather than refurbish it. However, the total cost of the project is anticipated to be approximately £2 billion, and progress has been slow.

The new design, unveiled by Foster + Partners, was most notable for its tent-like ceiling. However, according to The Sun, the roof Sir Jim Ratcliffe compared to the Eiffel Tower ‘may never come to pass’.

It is also worth noting that a single feature is anticipated to cost around £200 million, illustrating the project’s enormous expense. According to industry sources, Foster + Partners is ‘renowned for their expensiveness’.

Behind the scenes, United is said to be still working on finance for the huge project. According to reports, there are ‘differences’ between what is public and what is private in terms of the club’s fundraising efforts.

It was stated in November that the proposed ‘New Trafford’ would not receive government money, with The i Paper reporting that the Treasury will not commit any funds to the stadium.

Ratcliffe has stated that any transfer to a world-class new stadium would not occur until 2030, with the aim that construction might begin by the end of 2025.

When the plans were revealed last March, the Ineos CEO made no secret of his wish to see a ‘Wembley of the North’ built, emphasizing that any new stadium would have to be worthy of Manchester United’s stature.
