Former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand has advised young centre-back Leny Yoro to be more selective in physical battles during matches.
The 20-year-old has recently enjoyed increased playing time under manager Michael Carrick, starting Manchester United’s last three games.

Yoro has already made 27 appearances this season, closing in on the 32 matches he played during the previous campaign.
However, Ferdinand believes the youngster is still adjusting to the physical demands of the Premier League.
Speaking on his podcast Rio Ferdinand Presents, the former England defender explained that Yoro sometimes engages in too many physical duels against stronger opponents.
“He’s trying to fight too many fights in a game,” Ferdinand said. “Most strikers he faces are more physically developed, so he needs to choose his battles carefully.”
Martinez absence gives Yoro opportunity
Yoro’s recent run in the team has largely been due to the absence of Lisandro Martinez, who has been sidelined since February with a calf injury.
The Argentine defender has made just 15 appearances this season after previously spending nine months recovering from a serious ACL injury.
Martinez recently revealed how support from international teammates helped him through his difficult rehabilitation period.
Alexis Mac Allister and Emiliano Martinez both visited him at home to offer encouragement, reports Independent.
Despite Yoro’s current struggles adapting physically, Ferdinand believes the young defender has the potential to succeed if he learns when to commit to challenges.
With more experience and improved strength, the French defender could eventually become a key figure in Manchester United’s defence.
