Liverpool Ready ‘To Pay’ Record-Breaking Fee For ‘Nightmare’ Winger

Liverpool Ready ‘To Pay’ Record-Breaking Fee For ‘Nightmare’ Winger

Liverpool are reportedly prepared to activate the release clause in Nico Williams’ contract at Athletic Bilbao and bring him to Anfield during the summer transfer window.

Last week, transfer guru Fabrizio Romano revealed that Liverpool intend to bolster their roster with new wingers during the summer transfer window.

Romano said on his YouTube channel: “I think it will be a busy summer for Liverpool with wingers. It’s very clear they need to reinforce their wingers.

“The situation with Salah and Gakpo. In general, I think Liverpool need to add something fresh in that position. I will come back very soon to tell you more.”

It has been widely reported that the Reds are searching for a long-term replacement for Mohamed Salah, who has had a poor season by his standards and may be sold to the Saudi Pro League in the summer of 2026.

Although Cody Gakpo, a left-wing player for the Reds, only signed a new contract with Liverpool in August 2025, his performances for Arne Slot’s team this season have been lacklustre.

Gakpo may be able to depart given the most recent reports from Spain as reported by Football 365 on Liverpool’s intention to recruit left-winger Nico Williams from Athletic Bilbao during the summer transfer window.

Liverpool Willing To Beat Competition For Williams

According to reports in the Spanish media, Chelsea, Bayern Munich, and Liverpool are all eager to activate Williams’ contract’s release clause.

Last summer, Barcelona were on the verge of signing the winger, but the Spain international signed a new contract with Bilbao that included a €100 million release clause.

Williams would become the most expensive Spanish player in the world if Liverpool were to spend that amount. Kepa Arrizabalaga, for whom Chelsea paid €80 million to Bilbao in 2018, currently holds that record.
