Three Premier League players were subjected to racist abuse online following their games this weekend.
Wesley Fofana, Chelsea defender, Hannibal Mejbri Burnley midfielder posted photographs of racist insults they received privately over Instagram following their sides’ 1-1 draw at Stamford Bridge.
On Sunday, Wolverhampton striker Tolu Arokodare posted on Instagram racially charged insults he received during a 1-0 loss against Crystal Palace, in which he had a penalty saved.
The incidents occurred just days after UEFA launched an inquiry into claims by Real Madrid forward Vinicius Junior that he was racially harassed on the pitch by Benfica’s Gianluca Prestianni during a Champions League game in Lisbon.
Fofana, who was sent off for receiving two yellow cards against Burnley, tweeted screenshots of messages he received on Instagram, writing: “2026, nothing changes. These individuals are never punished.
“You create big campaigns against racism, but nobody actually does anything.”

Mejbri stated on his Instagram account, “It is 2026, and there are still individuals like that. “Please educate yourself and your children.”
Chelsea issued a statement saying the abuse aimed against Fofana was “completely unacceptable and runs counter to the values of the game and everything we stand for as a club.”
“We stand unequivocally with Wes,” the statement said. He has our entire support, as do all of our players, who are frequently forced to face abuse merely for doing their jobs.
“We will work with the relevant authorities and platforms in identifying the perpetrators and take the strongest possible action.”
Burnley said in a statement that there was “no place for this in our society and we condemn it unequivocally.”
