Lionel Messi is reportedly planning an official return to Barcelona once his playing career comes to an end.
The Argentine legend left Camp Nou in emotional circumstances in 2021 after the club’s financial crisis prevented a contract renewal.
Messi is currently contracted to Inter Miami, with fresh terms expected to keep him in MLS until at least 2028.

Despite settling well in the United States, reports from Spain claim Barcelona remains his long-term destination.
Messi and his wife Antonela Roccuzzo are said to be aligned on returning to Catalunya with their three sons.
The eight-time Ballon d’Or winner still owns property in Barcelona and considers the city his family’s true home.
Messi has also maintained close ties with former teammates and club staff since his departure.
Messi rules out playing return but eyes Camp Nou role
A playing comeback to Barcelona has already been ruled out due to his strained relationship with club president Joan Laporta.
However, Messi is believed to be open to a future non-playing role once he retires from professional football.
Sources suggest a sporting management, advisory or ambassadorial position could appeal to the former captain.
Messi has previously distanced himself from coaching, preferring an off-pitch role behind the scenes.
He recently visited Camp Nou privately to see progress on the stadium’s redevelopment, reports Goal.
Barcelona officials have long discussed the possibility of a testimonial match or official farewell.
A statue honouring Messi has also been mentioned but remains unconfirmed.
For now, Messi’s full focus remains on Inter Miami and Argentina’s 2026 World Cup defence.
But once his boots are finally hung up, Barcelona is expected to become home again for football’s greatest icon.
