Man City Defender Marc Guehi Ruled Out Against Newcastle Despite New Cup Eligibility Rule

Manchester City will be without Marc Guehi for Wednesday’s Carabao Cup semi-final second leg against Newcastle United.

The England international joined City from Crystal Palace in January for £20million, but EFL rules prevent him playing.

This season, domestic cup competitions changed rules, allowing players to represent two clubs in the same campaign.

Antoine Semenyo, who played for Bournemouth earlier, was eligible to score for City in the first leg.

Guehi ineligible despite rule change

Guehi is affected by a specific EFL exception regarding mid-season semi-final transfers and prior club appearances.

Rules state a player can feature for two clubs if transferred before the semi-final first leg, not after.

Since Guehi moved after the first leg, he cannot play for City against Newcastle in the second leg.

Newcastle face an uphill battle, trailing 2-0 from the first leg but hopeful due to City’s missing defender, reports Shield Gazette.

Injuries further challenge Newcastle, with Bruno Guimaraes doubtful and key players like Miley, Botman, Livramento sidelined again.

Despite Guehi’s absence, Manchester City remain favourites, though Newcastle historically struggle at the Etihad, failing to score in five attempts.
