Senegal coach Pape Thiaw has reportedly been fined $100,000 and suspended for five games by the Confederation of African Football for “unsporting conduct” after telling his players to leave the field during the Africa Cup of Nations final versus Morocco.
In addition, players Iliman Ndiaye and Ismaila Sarr have been suspended for two CAF games for unsporting behaviour against the referee, and the CAF fined Senegal football federation $615,000 for the team’s behaviour and that of their supporters.
According to the Irish Independent, the CAF’s Disciplinary Committee rejected Morocco’s request to have the game’s outcome reversed when Senegalese players abandoned the field, causing a 14-minute delay.
Additionally, hosts Morocco were fined a total of $315,000 for the conduct of their players and staff in the Video Assistant Review area, the actions of the ball boys during the game, and the use of lasers by spectators.
Ismael Saibari (three CAF games) and Morocco captain Achraf Hakimi (two CAF games, one suspended for a year) are banned for unsporting conduct after attempting to take Senegal goalkeeper Edouard Mendy’s pitch-side towel in a downpour in Rabat.
Senegalese coach Thiaw ordered his team to leave the field after a goal was disallowed late in the game and a few minutes later, Morocco was given a penalty, which Brahim Diaz eventually missed.
Pape Gueye’s goal in extra time helped Senegal win the match.
The otherwise outstanding Cup of Nations, which generated record revenue for CAF, came to an end with the violent events at the final.
