‘Man United Should Not Appoint Carrick Permanently’ – Neville

Gary Neville reportedly says Manchester United cannot think about retaining Michael Carrick as head coach past the end of the current campaign as Roy Keane urged his old team to pursue the “best of the best”.

After 14 disappointing and increasingly contentious months, Ruben Amorim was fired last week. Darren Fletcher briefly took over until another former Red Devils midfielder took over.

Carrick was named United’s head coach for the rest of the season on Tuesday. Co-owners Sir Jim Ratcliffe, Joel Glazer, and Avram Glazer are claimed to be at the Carrington training site on Thursday.

According to the Press Association as reported by The Independent, the club shifted their planned executive committee to Manchester so that management could be present to assist the new manager and create as little disruption as possible before his debut.

Neville Claims Man United Should Look Beyond Carrick Next Season

Neville is “quite emphatic” that his former teammate cannot be granted the job after this campaign, regardless of the outcome, as Carrick takes on Manchester City on Saturday lunchtime in his bid to secure Champions League qualification.

“I hope he does really well,” Neville said on Stick to Football. “There cannot be any consideration that Michael takes the job beyond this season, for Michael and for the club.

“If he wins every game, look, we could be sat here in the season where he’s done unbelievably well, and we’re always thinking the fans are up and they’re in the Champions League places, fifth or whatever.

“It could happen if there’s a good run and we could all be getting swayed with it.

“I honestly feel like (you have to look at others) at the end of the season when you’ve got (Mauricio) Pochettino, (Thomas) Tuchel and (Carlo) Ancelotti.”
