Adam Lawrence, the coach Darren Fletcher replaced as Manchester United’s U18s manager, has stepped down from his new role after just five months.
Lawrence left Old Trafford at the end of last season, paving the way for club legend Fletcher to take charge of United’s U18 side.
In September 2025, Lawrence joined Newcastle United as Lead Coach of their U21s, describing the move as a “real privilege”.
However, his time on Tyneside has been short-lived, with Newcastle confirming his departure earlier this week, reports Talk Sport.
In an official statement, the club announced that Lawrence had chosen to step down from his position, with Robbie Stockdale appointed as interim U21s coach.
Newcastle’s Academy Director Steve Harper thanked Lawrence for his contribution and wished him well in the next stage of his coaching career.
The comments suggested Lawrence could soon take up another opportunity elsewhere in football.
Lawrence Hints at Next Coaching Move
Lawrence later released a personal statement confirming the decision was difficult but necessary.
He explained that, despite the short stay, there are moments in life when tough choices must be made.
Lawrence thanked Newcastle for the opportunity and described the club as a “truly special place”, while confirming he is now exploring new coaching roles.

Before his Manchester United spell, Lawrence worked at Millwall and Charlton Athletic, eventually becoming Head of Academy Coaching at The Valley.
Meanwhile, Fletcher has returned to his U18s duties after a brief spell as caretaker first-team boss following Ruben Amorim’s dismissal.
The former Scotland international will be back in the dugout for United’s upcoming FA Youth Cup tie against Derby County.
