Real Madrid Outline Conditions For Arbeloa To Remain In Charge Beyond This Season

Alvaro Arbeloa’s time at Real Madrid started out turbulently, particularly after the club abruptly terminated Xabi Alonso’s contract and appointed his close buddy as the new coach.

Arbeloa was promoted from Real Madrid Castilla with immediate effect. He will oversee his first game as coach later today when Real Madrid play Albacete in the Copa del Rey Round of 16.

As has been the case in the past following mid-season sackings, his appointment has generally been viewed as a momentary arrangement.

However, MARCA conveys that the reality is rather different.

The New Long-Term Head Coach

According to the publication, Arbeloa has agreed to a deal with Real Madrid that goes beyond the current season. He is currently employed full-time and is not an interim coach.

He is obligated to lead the first team beyond June under the terms of the contract he signed with the team, though it’s unclear how long that will last.

It goes without saying, though, that how well he performs in the remaining games of this campaign will determine if he continues for the upcoming season.

The management of the club views him as a capable candidate to manage a long-term project and respects his coaching approach and straightforward attitude.

Only if the board’s goals for this season are not achieved—winning a major title being at the top of that list—will he be replaced.

When asked if he would continue past this season, the recently appointed manager chose to err on the side of caution and did not provide any specific time in an interview with the media yesterday.

“I’ve been here for 20 years, and I’ll stay as long as Madrid wants me to. This is my home, that’s how I feel,” he said.

He will undoubtedly try to make sure he has a respectably long tenure at arguably the biggest club in the world since he is aware that his destiny at the club is in his own hands.
