Jurgen Klopp has reacted publicly to Real Madrid’s decision to sack Xabi Alonso, admitting he was genuinely surprised by the club’s swift move following their Spanish Super Cup defeat to Barcelona.
Alonso was dismissed less than 24 hours after Madrid’s dramatic 3–2 loss in Jeddah, ending his brief spell at the Bernabéu just six months into the job.
Klopp, who was speaking during a live television broadcast when the news broke, was immediately asked whether Real Madrid had contacted him about the vacant role, reports Liverpool.
The former Liverpool manager confirmed that his phone had been ringing, though he made it clear the calls were not from Madrid and quickly distanced himself from any speculation.
Klopp suggested the decision highlighted deeper issues at the Spanish giants, pointing to the intense pressure that comes with managing Real Madrid.
He praised Alonso’s coaching credentials, referencing his outstanding work at Bayer Leverkusen and insisting the former midfielder had already proven his quality as a modern coach.
Klopp Rules Himself Out of Madrid Job
According to Klopp, Alonso’s sacking shows how little patience exists at elite clubs, especially after high-profile defeats against rivals like Barcelona.

He also admitted that rumours surrounding Alonso’s future had been circulating for weeks, making the final decision less shocking in hindsight.
Despite being previously linked with the Madrid job, Klopp firmly shut down any suggestion of a return to management.
The German is currently Red Bull’s head of global soccer and reiterated that Alonso’s dismissal “has absolutely nothing to do” with him or his future plans.
