FPL GW19 And 20 Recap: Any Good Alternative To Captain Haaland? iSoccer Winners

The Fantasy Premier League (FPL) Gameweek 20 was filled with many events including one we thought could never happen this season.

And that is Erling Haaland (£15.1m) blanking in three consecutive gameweeks. This is just to show how the Norwegian has been instrumental for the majority of managers this campaign.

However, Haaland obviously has dropped the ante recently as he has gone three matches without recording any returns which is seriously giving his backers the thoughts of seeking an alternative for him regarding the captain armband.

Looking at how inconsistent players have been so far this season, this thought even gets harder. Mohamed Salah (£14.0m) hasn’t been at his prime best and is currently away on international duty.

Bukayo Saka (£10.2m) has plundered just two double-figure hauls, Bruno Fernandes (£9.1m), who has been somewhat consistent is currently sidelined due to a hamstring injury. Though, Manchester United manager, Ruben Amorim claims the Portugal international could return before the end of January.

Cole Palmer (£10.4m) also has not been at his best as his seasonal tally of 35 points is by far the lowest since moving to Chelsea in 2023 no thanks to injury keeping him out for half of the matches this term.

The aforementioned popular assets should not cancel out your confidence in some other players, who you should consider as options to Haaland as far as the armband is concerned.

Ollie Watkins (£8.7m) is one of the assets, who has been nicking it right at least in the last few gameweeks.

The England international has collected 49 points in the last seven GWs including two double-digits against Brighton and Chelsea. He has blanked just once within this period.

With Crystal Palace (A), Everton (H), Newcastle United (A) and Brentford (H) coming up next for Aston Villa, it is not out of place if Watkins is being considered for the armband.

Declan Rice (£7.2m) is also another option for the armband. Though, this looks to be a wild take most especially when considering the fact the Arsenal star is not a conventional attacker. However, the returns he has been able to pull so far justify the reason he needs to be looked at.

The former West Ham United midfielder has collected 41 points across the last six GWs and just like Watkins, has blanked just once and produced two double-figure hauls.

His set-piece duties, arriving late on the edge of the box to get on the end of a cut-back pass (which was evident in the Gunners’ 3-2 victory at Bournemouth) and his ability to get defensive contributions points all make him a strong candidate for the captain armband.

Arsenal’s next four matches are Liverpool (H), Nottingham Forest (A), Man United (H) and Leeds (A).

After all said and done, we at the International (i)Soccer still feel Haaland is the favourite for the armband at least in the foreseeable future as Manchester City are billed to play Brighton (H), Man United (A), Wolves (H) and Tottenham Hotspur (A) in their next four games.
