Pep Guardiola appeared unhappy at the Stadium of Light as Manchester City’s profligacy in front of goal led to a goalless draw against Sunderland, leaving the champions four points behind Premier League leaders Arsenal.
City thought they had gotten off to a great start when Bernardo Silva scored from a corner kick in the first few minutes, but their celebrations were cut short by an offside flag. It set the tone for an evening in which Guardiola’s side lost by razor-thin margins despite extensive periods of possession.
Brian Brobbey forced an early save before Erling Haaland was denied at the other end, and Sunderland threatened intermittently on the break, with Trai Hume headed narrowly over shortly before halftime. City’s pressure increased after the restart, with Savinho twice coming close at the opening of the second half before Eliezer Mayenda tested Gianluigi Donnarumma.

The clearest opportunities appeared later on. Josko Gvardiol’s powerful header was wonderfully stopped by Joeri Roefs, and the defender smacked the post with 16 minutes remaining, capping off a night in which City saw every path to goal blocked. Sunderland held firm, extending their unbeaten home league record to ten games. Reported on X.
In His Words?
“Really good game, especially in the second half,” Guardiola stated. “The first half was quite close, and we had several chances to score from the six-yard box. We had many people there, and we performed well against a fantastic squad.
“I’m extremely satisfied and delighted with how we performed in this challenging venue against a difficult opponent. We tried everything to win, but we couldn’t do it.”
City trounced Sunderland 3-0 at the Etihad last month, although Guardiola praised Regis Le Bris’ side’s progress since then. “Really good, a surprise,” he stated. “I’m not sure whether teams can come here and create like we do. When you get five, six, or seven times in the six-yard box, you should score.”
Despite his annoyance, Guardiola soon shifted his focus to a busy schedule. “Now it’s recovery because we have two days to the Chelsea game and we’ll go for it,” according to him.
Le Bris, meanwhile, hailed his players’ discipline and courage as Sunderland maintained their remarkable season, sitting seventh at the halfway point. “One more good point against one of the best teams in Europe,” stated the captain. “With many threats, they can score from everywhere, so I think we defended well.”
