Legendary Real Madrid Defender Identifies The Toughest Rival He Ever Faced – ‘He Was A Star’

Marcelo spent more than a decade at the pinnacle of world football, competing against the finest strikers of his generation week after week.

From 2006 until 2022, the Brazilian left-back was a continuous presence for Real Madrid, winning all there was to win while frequently facing players capable of turning games on their own.

Marcelo recently reflected on those years during an appearance on DjMariio’s channel, when he was asked to name the opponents that caused him the most trouble on the pitch.

Given the caliber of players he faced in La Liga and Europe, his response carried significant weight.

A rather surprising name features.

When asked about the footballers who made his life the most difficult, Marcelo did not hesitate to name the obvious superstars.

Speaking candidly about such struggles, he stated, “Messi was quite harsh. “Jesus Navas also made it extremely difficult for me,” he admitted.

However, Marcelo’s next reflection drew the most attention.

When asked to pick a player who may not be well-known but was exceedingly difficult to defend against, the former Madrid great had an unexpected response.

“One who was normal for others but extremely difficult for me was Xabi Prieto.

“He was very tall, and I thought, ‘He’s not going to run. He’s not going to do anything.'” “But he was a star,” he added.

Marcelo was referring to Real Sociedad’s long-serving figure, Xabi Prieto.

Prieto’s intellect, timing, and ability to arrive in hazardous locations made him difficult to track, especially for a full-back required to balance defensive and attacking responsibilities.

Marcelo also acknowledged Pedro Rodriguez, also known as Pedrito, stating that danger did not necessarily come from the biggest names.

Given the date of Marcelo’s debut in Madrid, the rivalry with Real Sociedad became even more significant.

He joined the team soon after Sociedad was relegated in the 2006–2007 season. Their first significant clash after Sociedad’s return was on September 12, 2010, and Madrid triumphed 2-1.

Marcelo remembers Prieto with awe as a recurring and irritating challenge from that point on.
