Mo Salah Not In Egypt Squad As Liverpool Forward Is Left Out Before AFCON Starts

The 33-year-old Liverpool star has joined his national team ahead of the 2025-26 AFCON tournament in Morocco, where he is expected to captain the Pharaohs. Despite Salah’s benching in Liverpool’s previous five games, manager Hossam Hassan elected not to include him in Tuesday’s matchday roster.

The striker was benched by Arne Slot owing to a drop in form, and things got worse when he made stunning remarks during a post-match interview. Salah’s future at Liverpool is unknown after being left on the bench in a 3-3 draw with Leeds earlier this month.

He accused Liverpool of ‘throwing him under the bus’ and said that’someone’ wants him out of the team. The renowned winger also stated that he no longer has ‘any relationship’ with Slot.

Following their exclusion from Liverpool’s Champions League trip to face Inter Milan last week, vital meetings were held ahead of Saturday’s match against Brighton. This resulted in Salah’s return to the Reds’ lineup, where he contributed significantly to their 2-0 triumph despite starting on the bench once more, according to the Mirror.

He came off the bench to set up Hugo Ekitike for the Reds’ second goal with a precise cross from a corner. However, the Egyptian captain was nowhere to be found when the Pharaohs faced Nigeria.

Salah’s involvement was doubtful after arriving in Egypt early on Tuesday morning with Manchester City’s Omar Marmoush.

Mahmoud Saber and Mostafa Mohamed scored for the home team in Cairo, giving them a win in their only friendly match before the AFCON begins next Monday. Egypt is in a group with Zimbabwe, South Africa, and Angola.
