The painting honoring Trent Alexander-Arnold appears to have been vandalized just hours before the former Liverpool defender’s expected return to Anfield with Real Madrid.
The England star left the Premier League champions for La Liga after his contract expired amid controversy.
The two-time Premier League and Champions League winning full-back will likely encounter a cold reception when he reunites with Arne Slot and his former teammates.
Pictures of attackers defacing the painting appeared on social media just before the Merseyside clash. The artwork appears to have been covered with white paint, along with several references to “rats” and a Spanish statement that approximately translates to “Adios the rat.”

After the word “rat” was scribbled across the monument just before he left, this is going to be the second act of vandalism against it in less than six months.
The Anfield Wrap, a Liverpool fan podcast, commissioned the painting in 2019 as a means to commemorate their Champions League-winning season and motivate the future generation.
The mural, which is located on Sybid Road beneath the 61,000-seat stadium, depicts Alexander-Arnold wearing his number 66 shirt and a statement from the evening of their triumph at the Wanda Metropolitano: “I’m just a normal lad from Liverpool, whose dream has just come true.”
