FIFA Rejects Trump Talk Of Moving World Cup From ‘Unsafe’ Cities

FIFA has firmly responded to President Trump’s claims about potentially moving 2026 World Cup matches away from “dangerous” U.S. cities.

The president suggested he could intervene by declaring certain host cities unsafe, despite FIFA finalizing its hosting plan back in 2022.

That plan includes major NFL stadiums near New York, Los Angeles and San Francisco, all already contracted as official tournament venues, reports Washington Times.

FIFA’s vice president Victor Montagliani stressed governments cannot alter arrangements. “It’s FIFA’s jurisdiction, FIFA makes those decisions,” he told a London conference.

Montagliani, also president of CONCACAF, argued football is bigger than politics. He insisted no leader or government overrides global football’s governing body.

FIFA Stands Firm Against Political Interference

Trump’s comments came after a question about host cities that oppose his crime and immigration crackdowns. He said “safety” could force relocations.

He also hinted the same logic might apply to the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, raising further concerns about U.S. hosting credibility.

However, logistical and legal challenges mean changing venues eight months before kickoff would be almost impossible, according to FIFA’s planning teams.

The World Cup relies heavily on local governments for security, visas, and infrastructure, but final say rests entirely with FIFA officials.

Montagliani highlighted the sport’s resilience, reminding audiences: “Football is bigger than leaders, bigger than governments, bigger than political slogans — football always survives.”
