Marc Bernal, FC Barcelona’s midfield prodigy, returned to the field against Valencia on Sunday night, 383 days after suffering an ACL injury against Rayo Vallecano.
The 18-year-old midfield prodigy entered the game in the final 10 minutes, donning the number 22 of the first team, and was greeted with a deafening applause.
The bench rose to its feet, the crowd at Estadi Johan Cruyff exploded in applause for Pedri, and Bernal smiled, fully knowing that he was living a fantasy he had had countless times throughout a long and tough year.
Bernal was overjoyed.
Bernal’s return could not have been better: a fantastic assist for Robert Lewandowski’s sixth goal, a precision pass to his feet followed by a lob. The goal required VAR confirmation before it sparked wild celebrations in the stands.
“It’s a special sensation, and I’m overjoyed to be back. “They’ve made me very happy, and it’s something I’ll never forget,” he told TV3 (h/t SPORT).
“It’s been a long, difficult process, particularly at the beginning. I gradually began to feel better, and today has been a really memorable day,” he remarked.
Regarding Barcelona’s careful approach to his return, Bernal stated: “I wasn’t in a hurry, but I was genuinely looking forward to it. I felt great and wanted to play.
“The manager made the decision, and I’m delighted to be back today, here against Valencia.” I’m not in a hurry; I’m going through my process. These are the first few minutes, game by game, and I am completely sure.”
The La Masia midfielder also gave a brief interview to Barça One following the game, when he expressed his joy at being back.
“I’m quite glad and thrilled. “All of my teammates and staff came to congratulate me,” Bernal explained.
“It’s been a challenging journey, but today was a great day. “It has helped me become stronger and better understand myself,” the youngster added.
“I’m pleased with the support, but especially with the three points. Bernal said, “I thought about my family, especially my mother, with whom I spent a month locked in a hotel, and the physiotherapist Borja, who suffered more than I did.”
