Manchester United has the worst value for money of any Premier League club, according to new statistics, but two other heavyweights have also lost millions.
The pressure is back on Ruben Amorim, especially after his £200 million summer shopping binge, and his team is still waiting for their first win of the season.
Despite the high-profile signings of Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo, and Benjamin Sesko, United have struggled for goals and failed to dominate midfield. As a result, they could re-enter the market with less than a week remaining before the window shuts.
However, the club has long been blamed for not extracting value from arrivals, and has been accused of derailing the once promising careers of a number of players.
These claims appear to be supported by new findings from a statistician.
Indeed, according to Transfermarkt, United are at the bottom of a table comparing the squad cost and value of the top-flight’s current clubs. The estimated cost of assembling the Red Devils’ side is £1.1 billion, which dwarfs its value of £769 million.
of course, represents a significant loss of £322.9 million, highlighting why they were obliged to accept cut-price deals to sell their ‘Bomb Squad’, an undesired collection of superstars that included Jadon Sancho and Anthony.

Rather than risk keeping players at the club who don’t want to stay for another six months, United have dramatically reduced their fees. Sancho, who was signed from Borussia Dortmund for £73 million in July 2021, might now for as little as £17 million.
Wrong signings
They will also incur losses from the probable departures of Rasmus Hojlund, Antony, and Tyrell Malacia, while Chelsea has yet to meet Alejandro Garnacho’s valuation.
Chelsea paid about £1.2 billion on their team through Transfermarkt, but the same group of players is now worth £1 billion, a loss of £227.5 million. West Ham are third from bottom, with a difference of -£63 million, with Bournemouth just ahead on -£38.5 million.
Tottenham has also incurred a loss, although a small one of £11.9 million.
On the other end of the table, Arsenal is at the top, having earned £315.9 million after spending £826 million on their squad, which is now worth £1.1 billion.
Brighton, known for their shrewd business, achieved a substantial profit of £150.9 million and is now in second place.
Manchester City spent £987.3 million, but now have a squad worth £1.1 billion.
