Liverpool ‘Name England International On Their Centre Back Shortlist’

Liverpool are allegedly looking to add defensive cover this summer as they prepare to begin their Premier League championship defence.

Arne Slot’s side returned to Anfield on Monday for the first time since Diogo Jota’s death, playing two friendly against Athletic Bilbao from LaLiga.

Fielding two separate sides on the same day revealed a lack of depth in the heart of defence, with Andy Robertson and academy product Trey Nyoni filling in for the first game.

With Virgil van Dijk out due to illness and Joe Gomez still nursing an injury sustained during the club’s pre-season tour, Liverpool were forced to field Wataru Endo alongside their only available senior centre back, Ibrahima Konate.

This, combined with Jarell Quansah’s departure to Bayer Leverkusen last month, emphasized the Reds’ need for defense reinforcements, and the club is apparently actively scouting potential candidates.

Mail Sport reported earlier this summer that Crystal Palace skipper Marc Guehi is on the club’s radar.

The England international’s current contract at Selhurst Park expires in less than a year, and reports claim he would be interested in a move to Liverpool.

Newcastle fought hard to sign Guehi last summer as a long saga unfolded over his future before he eventually stayed at Palace.

According to a report in The Times, the club is also monitoring Parma’s Giovanni Leoni.

Leoni, who is only 18, already starts for the Serie A team and received praise for his efforts last season, as the club avoided relegation in their first season back in the top flight.
