Barcelona Legend Xavi Applies For Indian Football Team Coach Job, Rejected

According to reports, Xavi Hernandez, a former Barcelona and Spain midfield virtuoso, applied for the position of head coach of the Indian football team, but the AIFF Technical committee turned down his application. In his final managerial position, Xavi led his cherished Barcelona from 2021 to 2024 before the board fired him following a 2023–2024 season without a trophy.

Three candidates—Khalil Jamil, Stephen Constantine, and Stefan Tarkovic—were selected from among 170 applications that were assessed earlier this week for the open position on the Indian men’s football squad.

One of the most well-known applicants for the position was Xavi, who also managed Al-Sadd of Qatar from 2019 to 2021. The Times of India said that the AIFF did not consider Xavi because they were unable to pay the terms of the deal.

One of the best passers in football history and a master of the midfield, Xavi won eight La Liga championships and four UEFA Champions League trophies with FC Barcelona. He also played a key role in Spain’s wins at the UEFA Euro 2008 and 2012 and the 2010 FIFA World Cup.

Joan Laporta, the president of Barcelona, relieved Xavi of his responsibilities after he had been in charge for over three seasons.

Following a virtual meeting, the AIFF chose three contenders to coach the Indian men’s football team.

Before deciding on a replacement for Manolo Marquez, who was fired by the federation earlier this month, the resumes of these three applicants will be reviewed.
