Manchester United have reportedly made attempts to hijack a move for Viktor Gyokeres from Arsenal.
The Portuguese team and Arsenal have been negotiating for a while, and the Gunners were hopeful of reaching an agreement before their preseason tour to Singapore.
Sporting president Frederico Varandas hasn’t wavered in his valuation of the Swedish player, though.
According to Manchester Evening News, United, however, have kept a close eye on the situation and made an effort to sign the Swedish talisman when issues between Sporting and Arsenal arose.

“On Sunday, the club coached by Ruben Amorim, began negotiations with Sporting for the transfer of Gyokeres, as we understand for values higher than those being agreed with Arsenal (€63million fixed, plus €10 for objectives),” Portuguese newspaper Record wrote.
“From what we’ve been able to gather, the agreement between the Lions and the Reds was very close – they were proposing a deal worth €80m.
“However, it seems unlikely that this aligns with the Swedish international’s intentions, as he remains firm about his future.
“He only wants to wear the Gunners’ shirt in the next step of his professional career.”
Gyokeres, who was recently spotted in Mallorca, is still awaiting a decision regarding his future outside of Portugal and has missed Sporting’s preseason training.
