Arsenal Surpass Chelsea As Huge World Record Broken

Arsenal have confirmed the signing of Liverpool forward, Olivia Smith in a world-record deal.

The Champions League winners reportedly paid a record £1 million for the 2004-born Canada international, making her the most expensive female player in history and the first to command seven figures.

The previous record set by Chelsea Women, who spent almost £900,000 in January to buy American defender Naomi Girma from San Diego Wave, is surpassed by Smith’s move to North London.

The 20-year-old will wear the number 15 shirt for Renee Slegers’s team and is said to have signed a four-year contract with Arsenal through the summer of 2029.

Speaking to the club’s website in her first interview since joining the reigning European champions, Smith said: “It’s a privilege and an honour to sign for Arsenal.

“Everything that Arsenal has accomplished is just so massive, and for me to now be a part of that, I’m very excited.

“I think it’s always a very difficult decision to make a change, but at the end of the day, always want to grow, and I think that’s been my philosophy going through my career ever since I was young.

“Just want to find new ways to grow, learn from different coaches, learn from different teammates.

“I just felt like now is the right time, and it’s always been my dream to play for a club like Arsenal as well, and they’re doing so well again, so I’m excited to be here.”
