Real Madrid is reportedly getting closer to a deal for former Manchester United left back Alvaro Carreras, which may bring the Red Devils significant financial benefits.
Carreras, 22, formerly known as Fernandez, rose through Real’s youth ranks before moving to Old Trafford as a 17-year old in 2020.
The Spaniard did not appear for United, but did spend time on loan with Preston, Granada, and Benfica.
He eventually joined Benfica on a permanent basis in the summer of 2024 for a fee of up to €9 million (£7.8 million).
The 22-year-old impressed in Portugal, appearing 68 times for Benfica, and he has since piqued the interest of several prominent European clubs, including his former club Real.
According to Fabrizio Romano, Carreras is on the verge of returning to the Bernabeu after reaching an agreement with Benfica worth €50 million (£43 million).
According to the source, in addition to the fixed fee, Real youngster Rafael Obrador has agreed to move in the opposite direction for €5 million (£4.3 million).

Obrador, 21, is also a left back who has made 68 appearances for Real Madrid Castilla, the Spanish club’s reserve squad.
If a transaction is completed, it would be good news for United, as the Red Devils included a 20% sell-on clause for any transfer fee exceeding £5 million when he joined Benfica.
And for €50 million (£43 million), Ruben Amorim’s side would be due €10 million (£8.6 million), a nice boost for the Portuguese as he attempts to restructure his squad following a disappointing 2024-25 season.
Meanwhile, considering Ferland Mendy’s injury issues last season, left back has been considered as a key position for Real this summer, despite Fran Garcia’s impressive performance at the Club World Cup.
