The crash occurred early last Thursday on the A-52 motorway near Zamora, Spain.
The police report indicates that excessive speed may have been a key factor, with investigators analyzing wheel tread marks and scene evidence. While the final report is still being compiled, the Civil Guard confirmed:
“Everything is pointing to a possible high excess of speed… All the tests carried out point to the driver of the crash vehicle being Diogo Jota.”
The accident happened just 12 days after the 28-year-old forward married his longtime partner, Rute Cardoso, mother of his three children.
His funeral, alongside his 26-year-old brother, took place on Saturday in their hometown of Gondomar, Portugal, reports Mirror.
Back in England, Liverpool returned to pre-season training on Tuesday. The squad remains deeply affected, with stars like Mohamed Salah and coach Arne Slot expressing their grief publicly.
Salah posted: “Teammates come and go, but not like this… it’s going to be extremely difficult to accept.”
