Chelsea ‘Hold Talks’ Over New Stadium Plans Amid Power Struggles

Chelsea have reportedly held talks with the Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan over the construction of a new stadium in Earl’s Court.

Given that the English giants’ home stadium, Stamford Bridge, may be lagging behind their rivals’, the topic of a new stadium for the west London club has been up for debate for a while.

With a capacity of almost 41,000, Stamford Bridge is now the ninth-largest Premier League venue, placing Chelsea more than 33,000 seats behind league leaders Manchester United at Old Trafford and 7,000 less than recently promoted Sunderland.

The Blues’ future stadium has long been discussed, with owners apparently having differing opinions regarding whether it should be a full rebuild, a renovation, or a move.

The Telegraph as claimed by Daily Mail stated that after London Mayor Sadiq Khan publicly invited the owners of Chelsea to clarify whether they plan to redevelop Stamford Bridge or consider a relocation to Earl’s Court, the club recently met with authorities at City Hall.

Khan’s remarks were made in April when Chelsea chairman Todd Boehly hinted to internal conflicts with co-owners Jose E. Feliciano and Behdad Eghbali over the team’s long-term stadium plans.

Following Chelsea’s 3-1 victory over Liverpool on May 5, minority stakeholder Hansjorg Wyss fueled further rumors by calling Earl’s Court ‘the best option we can even think of.’

He told Chelsea Fan TV: “If it’s going to happen, I don’t know. There’s a lot of obstacles. But, right now, we don’t have one person who drives that project. That’s what we need.”

Meanwhile, co-owner Boehly had earlier suggested that a move to a new stadium may have to wait until 2042.
