David Ornstein believes Liverpool may dominate the Premier League for several years if Arne Slot is able to sign his undoubted number one transfer target this summer, but dwindling prospects mean the Reds manager may have to settle with a ‘high risk’ backup plan.
The Merseysiders are basking in the glory of winning only their second Premier League title – and the first in front of their own fans – following a remarkable first season under Slot’s direction. Liverpool’s success is all the more impressive given that the Dutchman inherited practically the same squad as Jurgen Klopp, with just the £12.5 million Federico Chiesa acquired from the previous year.
However, all of that will change this summer, with Slot armed with a truckload of cash and a plan to stamp his dominance on Liverpool.
And with two new defenders – a left-back and a centre-back are the priority despite Trent Alexander-Arnold’s probable exit at right-back – and a striker the key aims this summer, Liverpool are already being connected with several high-profile signings.

To that purpose, Liverpool are said to be major fans of Newcastle star Alexander Isak, who was dubbed a dream signing for Slot this summer by multiple sources.
And, while a hypothetical move appears incredibly tough to complete, not least due to the Magpies’ required £130 million value, Ornstein believes his signing would transform Liverpool into a frightening proposition.
“There is an expectation that Darwin Nunez will leave, and Liverpool will need to bring in somebody in that position, you assume,” Ornstein told The Athletic FC podcast. “It’s frightening to consider what Liverpool may achieve in local and European competition if they can sign a goalscorer.
