Cristian Stellini, the Tottenham interim head coach, has been fired following the team’s humiliating defeat at Newcastle on Sunday.
The club’s prospects of competing in the Champions League are hanging by a thread after Spurs were destroyed 6-1 at St. James Park over the weekend.
And after talks earlier on Monday, chairman Daniel Levy realized his situation was untenable.
Following Antonio Conte’s resignation from the team last month, Stellini, who served as his assistant, was given temporary leadership of the group. However, Stellini has joined Conte in having left the club.
Ryan Mason, who is a coach under Stellini, is understood to have significant support of Spurs players to take the team until the end of the season.
Spurs were left humiliated at Newcastle on Sunday after a performance that Stellini described as the ‘worst’ he has ever seen.

Given Stellini’s connections to Conte, there were concerns behind the scenes that not much had changed under his guidance and that the team needed an entirely different approach.
Since Conte left the team, Mason hasn’t been able to fully establish his authority as he is an assistant.
However, the former Tottenham player is qualified to lead the group considering that he has served as interim manager before.
