Xabi Alonso Drops Liverpool Hint As Real Madrid Pressure Grows

Xabi Alonso has fuelled speculation about a future return to Liverpool after admitting he would “welcome” a Premier League job one day.

Alonso has endured a difficult start at the Bernabeu, winning just two of his last six matches.

A home defeat to Celta Vigo intensified concerns inside a dressing room where senior players are reportedly unsure about his tactical approach.

With Real Madrid struggling and Arne Slot also under scrutiny at Liverpool, Alonso’s comments have quickly caught attention among Reds supporters.

‘In future, you never know’ — Alonso on Liverpool links

Speaking before the City match, Alonso acknowledged his strong bond with Liverpool, where he played from 2004 to 2009.

“Of course there is a bond with my former club, but for now this is my place,” he said. “In future, you never know what might happen.”

The 44-year-old turned down Liverpool in 2024 when Jurgen Klopp left, opting to stay at Bayer Leverkusen for another year.

But with Madrid’s form dipping and pressure rising, speculation is growing again, reports Manchester Evening News.

Alonso also avoided giving an opinion on Mohamed Salah’s explosive interview, in which the Egyptian accused Liverpool of “throwing me under the bus.” Salah has been left out of the Champions League squad to face Inter Milan.

“This decision has been made in Liverpool,” Alonso said. “We’re missing many details. I don’t need to say anything.”

Despite the tension, Alonso urged focus on City, calling the match an “opportunity” and insisting he still has full support from Real president Florentino Pérez and the board.
