Lia Walti was in Cannes attending a national team camp when it was revealed that Switzerland would host Euro 2025.
Later that morning, when the news was brought to her team, the Swiss captain recalled how she had unintentionally set her alarm.
“I missed the announcement,” she told GQ in an interview. “Everybody was downstairs having a glass of Champagne, but I missed the whole thing!”
As Leah Williamson rose to prominence as the inspirational captain who led England to victory at the 2022 home Euros, Switzerland’s own “LW” is set to become the same person this summer.

When the Euros start on July 2, the 32-year-old, who has already authored a children’s book called “Lia’s Football Journey” to encourage young boys and girls to participate in sports, will look to transform her 125 caps into a successful run.
Her teammates nicknamed her “snake-hips” because of her proficiency with the ball, quick reflexes, and ability to slither out of tight situations. I n May 2025, Walti and her teammates experienced something they would never forget.
The team overcame all odds to take down Barcelona and win the Champions League title again, making them just the second English team to do so (the first being Arsenal’s 2006–07 team).
According to talkSPORT, Walti encountered some extremely challenging challenges along the way.
Numerous health problems made the previous year especially challenging. In fact, one of them was so serious that she ended up on life support.
Walti, who had already battled knee issues at the start of the year, had assumed she was getting better gradually until she noticed a lump on her body.
She told Blue Sport that if she hadn’t found it when she did, things may have turned out quite differently.
What Did Walti Say About Her Health Struggles?
“What looked small turned out to be an abscess,” she said. Because we recognized it early, I got the help I needed.”
She added: “It’s life-threatening if you don’t take it seriously or don’t find it.”
