Spanish Authorities Withdrew The Racism Case Of Vinicius Junior Claimed There Was Insufficient Evidence

Hopefully, the previous season marked a turning point for Spanish football, since Vinicius Junior endured ongoing racial abuse all through the season. There have been more sporadic incidents this year, but thankfully the clubs and authorities have responded to them much more quickly. Nevertheless, one of the previous season’s court cases has been dropped.

According to Football Espana, During a game against Osasuna at El Sadar in February of the previous season, there was an incident where someone from the crowd was captured on camera yelling racist epithets at Vinicius. But because there is insufficient evidence, the court has chosen to archive the case.

According to Marca, the court statement stated, “From the actions that occurred, it is clear that the facts could constitute a crime, but there is not enough data to know the identity of the perpetrators.”

While efforts to root out racism in Spanish stadiums have generally been more concentrated, there is a risk that those who go unpunished will give racists the freedom to mistreat players in the future if they believe they can remain anonymous. Over the past 12 months, the Real Madrid player has made it his mission to combat racism, leading to a greater involvement from La Liga in identifying and prosecuting racists.
