Roy Keane hits out at ‘disgraceful’ Manchester United players

Roy Keane has claimed Manchester United’s underperforming players will cost Ole Gunnar Solskjaer his job if they cannot turn their season around.

The Red Devils were thrashed 6-1 by Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday in United’s joint-heaviest Premier League defeat in their history and were 4-1 down at half-time following a dismal first-half.

And former United midfielder Keane, who captained the club for eight years between 1997 and 2005, believes Solskjaer could suffer a similar fate to his predecessor Jose Mourinho at Old Trafford.

Keane told ITV on Thursday night: ‘The performance against Spurs was disgraceful. A disgrace to the badge with that performance.

‘(There were) too many bluffers and ultimately, these players will cost Ole his job.

‘They threw the previous manager (Mourinho) under the bus. They will do the same to Ole.’

Former United boss Mourinho, who masterminded Spurs’ win at Old Trafford on Sunday, was sacked by the club in December 2018 despite having spent £400million on new players during his time in Manchester.

Solskjaer was installed as Mourinho’s replacement on an initial temporary basis and was made United’s permanent head coach after he guided the club to the Champions League quarter-finals in 2019.

The club appeared to be heading in the right direction after registering a third-placed finish in the Premier League last term, but have just one win in three games at the start of the current campaign.

Before the defeat to Spurs, Keane believed there are ‘tough days ahead’ for United due to their lack of spending in the transfer window.

The club were active on deadline day just 24 hours after the Spurs defeat, bringing in free agent Edinson Cavani as a striking option and £13million left-back Alex Telles in their bid to fix the defence.
