Rigobert Song comes out of two-day coma

Former Cameroon player Rigobert Song has awoken from a coma after spending two days in hospital.

The 40-year-old ex-defender collapsed on Sunday and was admitted to Yaounde Central Hospital, but having awoken he will now be flown to France for further treatment.

“He has come out of his coma and the oxygen has been disconnected,” Dr Louis Joss Bitang A Mafok, director of the hospital’s emergency centre said, as reported by BBC Sport.

“His high blood pressure has returned to normal and the cerebral haemorrhage has been controlled.

“A medical aircraft will be in Cameroon in (Tuesday) morning. We will have a working session with the French team and then he will be flown to France.”

Song, the uncle of former Arsenal and Barcelona player Alex Song, played for Cameroon for 17 years, making 137 appearances, as well as turning out for Metz, Liverpool, West Ham and Galatasaray, among others.

Having retired from professional football in 2010 following a spell with Trabzonspor he briefly managed Chad’s national team in 2015.
