Premier League Legend Says ‘Arsenal Would Never Win The League’ After Slamming VAR Decision

Peter Schmeichel criticised the controversial VAR decision that ruled out Callum Wilson’s late equaliser during West Ham United’s narrow defeat to Arsenal on Sunday.

Leandro Trossard scored in the 83rd minute to hand Arsenal a crucial advantage in the Premier League title race at London Stadium.

West Ham believed they had rescued a dramatic point deep into stoppage time after Wilson converted from close range following a crowded set-piece.

However, celebrations were cut short after VAR instructed referee Chris Kavanagh to review the incident on the pitchside monitor.

Officials determined that West Ham defender Pablo had fouled Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya by holding his arm before the ball entered the net.

Schmeichel Questions Arsenal’s Set-Piece Approach

Schmeichel strongly disagreed with the decision and insisted Arsenal themselves regularly use similar blocking tactics during attacking set-pieces throughout the season.

The former Manchester United goalkeeper claimed Arsenal would never lead the Premier League if those actions were consistently punished as fouls.

Speaking after the match, Schmeichel described the decision as “wrong on so many levels” and criticised the lengthy VAR review process heavily.

He argued that repeated replays created unnecessary doubt and insisted the contact on Raya should never have resulted in a disallowed goal, reports Daily Star.

Schmeichel also questioned why officials suddenly punished physical set-piece battles despite similar incidents frequently occurring across Premier League matches this campaign.

Meanwhile, Jarrod Bowen echoed frustration over the decision, while Mikel Arteta defended the officials for making a “brave” and consistent call under pressure.
