Premier League Cautioned As Man City Faces Relegation Risk

Man City remain locked in a legal battle with the Premier League over 115 alleged financial breaches.

An independent commission began hearings in September 2024 before concluding proceedings in December after months of arguments.

The investigation originally opened in 2018, with formal charges finally issued against City in February 2023, reports Football 365.

Allegations cover financial reporting, sponsorship valuations, manager and player payments, plus compliance with UEFA and league rules.

City are also accused of failing to fully cooperate with investigators across seasons spanning 2009-10 through 2022-23.

Purslow Warns Sporting Sanction Could Mean Relegation

Former Liverpool, Chelsea and Aston Villa executive Christian Purslow believes resolution remains some distance away.

Speaking on The Football Boardroom with Henry Winter, Purslow highlighted potential appeals delaying sanctions significantly.

He warned any guilty verdict could trigger prolonged appeal proceedings lasting months beyond the initial ruling.

Importantly, he argued sanctions themselves might also be postponed while legal reviews continue.

Purslow strongly cautioned against any private settlement between the league and City outside formal process.

He described an agreed compromise as a terrible mistake that would satisfy neither rival clubs nor supporters.

Instead, Purslow insists the Premier League must allow independent judges to determine precedent and punishment.

According to him, precedent suggests heavy sporting sanctions, potentially significant points deductions affecting league status.

Such deductions, he concluded, would likely translate into relegation should the commission rule against City.
