Police to be briefed on Mourinho-Guardiola rivalry ahead of Manchester derby

Police officers on duty for Saturday’s Manchester derby will be informed on the bitter history between rival managers Jose Mourinho and Pep Guardiola ahead of the game.

Mourinho and Guardiola will face eachother in the Premier League for the first time when Manchester United take on Manchester City in an eagerly- anticipated encounter at Old Trafford, and the pair have a fierce rivalry having previously managed Real Madrid and Barcelona respectively.

A source told the Daily Mail: “There is no intelligence to suggest that there will be mass disorder.

“And while it does not necessarily affect the risk element, police are aware of the Jose Mourinho/Pep Guardiola rivalry and that the arrival of the new managers and their own rivalry could bring heightened tension.

“No extra resources are being deployed because of it, but it’s something that will be part of the review and will be relayed to officers on duty at the game.”

There will be around 400 officers on duty for the game, and there have been fears that the rivalry between Mourinho and Guardiola could cause tensions to flare amongst supporters.

Both United and City have made impressive starts to the campaign, with the two sides boasting 100% records so far in the Premier League. The clubs were both heavily active during the summer transfer window as they secured deals for some high-profile players, which will add an extra edge to the occasion.

United had to battle arduously to overcome Hull in their last fixture, and Mourinho’s side will be anticipating another tough encounter when they take on City.

Guardiola’s team, meanwhile, have played some swashbuckling football at times and have created 38 chances in the Premier League so far this season.
