Michael Carrick has explained why Benjamin Sesko was substituted during Manchester United’s thrilling 3-2 victory against Liverpool. Sesko, 22, was substituted by Amad at halftime in Sunday’s Premier League match.
The striker had put United ahead 2-0 with a disputed goal, as the ball looked to touch his fingertips on its way in. The regulation specifies that any touch of the scorer’s hand or arm will result in the goal being disallowed.
However, VAR determined that there was insufficient evidence to overturn Sesko’s eleventh goal of the season and second in as many games. The Slovenian was unable to add to his score after the interval, and Carrick said that his substitution was due to a clash with the advertising boards.
“He got a bang on his shin when he fell down the side of the pitch,” the Red Devils’ manager told MUTV. “It’s something he’s been carrying for a while, so we’ve had to manage him a little, but he’s definitely had a bang in the same location. “It’s really that simple.”
In His Words?
Carrick also told Sky Sports after the game: “He’s been dealing with a shin injury for a while, and it was exacerbated when he was shoved into the hoarding and down the slope. So, that was it.”
Sesko, who scored in the reverse tie at Old Trafford earlier this season, will be hoping to recover in time for Saturday’s visit to Sunderland. United’s £74 million signing, on the other hand, may not be at danger because they have already qualified for the Champions League.
The victory against Liverpool ensures that no club outside the top five can catch United, who squandered a two-goal lead until Kobbie Mainoo scored late in front of the Stretford End. “There has been a lot of good work to put us in a position with three games to go and get that sealed,” Carrick said.
