Liverpool have won the race to recruit in-demand defender Jeremy Jacquet, after reaching an agreement with Rennes late on Sunday night.
Chelsea had also been after the centre-back, while Bayern Munich was keen but had fallen out of the competition in recent days due to their inability to match the Premier League clubs’ financial strength.
Fabrizio Romano supplied the update in recent hours, with Liverpool agreeing to a total transaction for £61 million. However, the midfielder will not join Liverpool until the conclusion of the season, with Rennes manager Habib Beye insisting the player will not leave the French club in the middle of the season.
Romano provided an update on X, saying, “Jeremy Jacquet to Liverpool, here we go!” The deal has finally been agreed upon for June 2026, as previously stated. The cost is €60 million, plus €10 million in Rennes add-ons. Jeremy has agreed to personal terms with LFC. An agreement has been reached for one of the world’s most gifted center backs in the summer of 2026.”
Jacquet made his professional debut for Rennes in January 2024, however he spent last season on loan at Ligue 2 club Clermont Foot. This season, he has emerged as a vital player for Rennes, appearing in 18 Ligue 1 games and starting 90 percent of them.
The deal might be vitally significant for Liverpool, who need to add more long-term options at centre back.
Ibrahima Konate is out of contract this summer, while Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez have only 18 months left on their contracts with the club. Giovanni Leoni is the club’s only long-term option outside of its youth players.
