Lionel Messi’s World Cup Post Breaks Record On Instagram

Following Argentina’s victory over Croatia in the 2022 FIFA World Cup semi-finals, one Twitter user joked: “That Messi World Cup trophy pic on his Instagram, if it happens, will do numbers that are yet to be invented.”

Argentina did go on to win the World Cup, courtesy of a brace from Lionel Messi and a goal from Angel di Maria in the final after which Emiliano Martinez’s heroics in the penalty shoot-out took them to the trophy.

Later that night, Messi posted his photo with the World Cup trophy, with a long caption talking about his dream to win the competition.

“CHAMPIONS OF THE WORLD!”, it read.

Two days after it was posted, it has, unsurprisingly, become the most-liked photo ever posted on the social media app, overtaking the ‘World Record Egg’.

Messi’s post, at the time of writing, has reached 58.1 million likes, with 1.6 million comments on it. The egg, on the other hand, is on 56.2 million likes.

Messi is the third-most followed account on the platform after Instagram themself and Cristiano Ronaldo, who has 519 million followers.

However, three of the Argentine’s posts feature in the top ten of the most-liked posts, with another photo with the World Cup trophy also making it into the top 4 with 33.9 million likes.
