Everton Files An Appeal Against The Premier League’s Point Deduction

England’s Liverpool (AP) — In an attempt to overturn the Premier League’s decision to dock Everton 10 points for violating the competition’s financial regulations, the team filed an appeal on Friday.

With Everton now in the relegation zone and facing the possibility of losing its 70-year run in the top division, the deduction was the largest sporting penalty in the 31-year history of the Premier League.

According to Toronto Star, an independent commission concluded that, from the end of the 2021–22 season until then, the club had lost 124.5 million pounds ($155 million). Clubs may suffer fines if they lose more than 105 million pounds ($130 million) over a three-year period, according to the league’s profit and financial sustainability regulations.

“Everton Football Club has today lodged with the chair of the Premier League’s judicial panel its appeal of the decision by a Premier League commission to impose a 10-point deduction on the club,” Everton said in a brief statement. “An appeal board will now be appointed to hear the case.”

Everton’s previous statement stated that the team “does not recognize the finding that it failed to act with the utmost good faith” and that the points deduction was “a wholly disproportionate and unjust sporting sanction.”

The Merseyside club, a nine-time league champion and a top-division team since 1954, is among the most illustrious teams in England.

On goal differential, Everton is one place ahead of Burnley in the bottom half and visits Nottingham Forest on Saturday.

The Premier League has reportedly accused Chelsea and Manchester City of a number of rule violations. The league charged City, the reigning English and European champion, in February of giving false information about its finances from 2009 to 2018, encompassing 115 alleged violations.
