After halftime, the Selecao got better, and in the 56th minute, Casemiro levelled the score. Gabriel Martinelli scored a 96th minute close-range goal to seal a thrilling 2-1 victory. Following the pre-match remarks that had heightened the atmosphere in the match, Cunha went for Japan forward Shiogai after the final whistle.
What Shogai Said
Shiogai’s evaluation of Brazil’s current standing in international football dominated the lead-up to the game.
He said that Neymar “wasn’t the same anymore” and that the Selecao were no longer as respected as they once were.
Ancelotti later called his remarks “mind games,” but they seemed to give the Brazilian team more inspiration.
Shiogai said: “I don’t hear much about Brazil these days. Brazil used to be a powerhouse, but now only France and Argentina are strong.”
According to Goal, following Brazil’s victory, Cunha was seen holding up five fingers in reference to Brazil’s five World Cup titles before directing a five-word taunt at Shiogai: “Five World Cups… you small!”
