Benzema joins all-time list of Champions League goalscorers

Super-sub Karim Benzema has become the Champions League’s six highest goalscorer of all time after he helped the side to a 2-1 victory over Sporting on Tuesday evening.

Los Blancos looked to be heading for a draw when Adrien Silva’s penalty in the 80th minute cancelled out Raphael Varane’s strike in the 29th minute.

But the France international had other ideas when he headed home from a curling Sergio Ramos free kick to hand the visitor the three points.

In doing so, Benzema netted his 48th goal in the competition, which sees him level with Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Andrij Shevchenko in the leaderboard and trails fifth-placed Thierry Henry by two goals.

Meanwhile, teammate Cristiano Ronaldo retains a healthy lead at the top with 95 goals, five ahead of nemesis Lionel Messi, who has 90 to his name.
