Atletico Madrid Set To Sign 21-Year-Old Defender

Atletico Madrid are reportedly close to signing young central defender Santiago Mourino. Los Colchoneros appears to be Uruguayan’s next club. After Racing Montevideo announced that the 21-year-old Uruguayan could leave the club.

According to Marca, the transfer might take place in the next few hours as Atletico looks to sign the promising player from the Uruguayan league. He has been likened to Ronald Araujo in the past and is notable for his strength.

After signing his contract with Atletico Madrid, Mourino will most likely depart on loan in the upcoming campaign. Reports from Diario AS say he will probably not stay for any of the preseason with Atletico and will instead go right away. They suggest Mexico’s Atletico San Luis, a club that partners with Los Rojiblancos, as a possible destination.

Real Zaragoza are also interested in bringing him on loan. Which could lead to him ending somewhere closer to home.

This season, Zaragoza brought in Giuliano Simeone and Victor Mollejo on a short term basis to La Romareda. And despite the lack of a formal partnership, the two clubs appear to get along well.

Simeone has been criticized for not bringing in enough young talents into the team. Mourino, along with players like Samuel Lino, Rodrigo Riquelme, and Pablo Barrios, who all have a chance to make the first team next season, are obviously a part of a concerted effort to change that.
