Aston Villa sack Di Matteo after one win in 11 league games

Aston Villa have sacked manager Roberto Di Matteo after winning just one of their 11 games in the Championship this season.

Di Matteo took over at Villa in the summer following their relegation to the Championship but the former Champions League-winning manager has not been able to push them into a promotion chase.

Villa currently sit in 19th place in the table having won just one of their 11 games in the division, and their winless run was extended to nine matches at the weekend following a 2-0 defeat to Preston North End.

The club have taken no time at all to hesitate over the decision either, with Villa confirming his sacking early this morning via their official website.

“The Club would like to place on record its appreciation to Roberto for all his efforts in helping rebuild the squad and wish him well for the future,” a statement read.

Steve Clarke will take temporary charge of first-team affairs while a replacement is found.

Villa have only lost three games which is the same as title-chasing Newcastle United, who were also relegated last season, but their seven draws shows an inability to see games out and grab a win.
