Alvarez Snubs Arsenal To Join Barca

Julian Alvarez has reportedly decided he wants to join Barcelona despite strong interest from Arsenal this summer.

The Argentine forward is said to be searching for a “more ambitious project” after two trophyless seasons with Atletico Madrid.

Arsenal had explored a possible move for Alvarez, especially with sporting director Andrea Berta maintaining a close relationship with the striker’s agent.

However, reports in Spain claim Alvarez has rejected Atletico’s offer of a new contract and is prioritising a switch to Barcelona instead.

Atletico Madrid Demand Huge Fee

Atletico are reportedly demanding around £129.5 million for the former Manchester City attacker, making any transfer extremely difficult for interested clubs.

The Spanish side have also warned Alvarez to resolve his future quickly rather than dragging negotiations deep into the summer transfer window, reports Metro.

Radio Marca journalist Roberto Gomez claimed Atletico do not want “summer snakes or sharks” surrounding the player’s situation before the new season begins.

Despite failing to win silverware since arriving in Madrid, Alvarez has still produced impressive numbers with 49 goals and 17 assists in 106 appearances.

Former Arsenal midfielder Paul Merson recently backed the Gunners to sign Alvarez, describing him as the ideal striker for Mikel Arteta’s side.

Still, Barcelona now appear to be leading the race if they can somehow meet Atletico Madrid’s enormous valuation this summer.
