Given that Sandro Tonali is expected to depart Newcastle United this summer, Jamie Carragher would have preferred Liverpool to make a move for the midfield player.
Manchester City, Arsenal, and Manchester United, the Reds’ Premier League rivals, all expressed interest in Tonali, but Tottenham Hotspur has taken the lead after their $106 million (£80 million) approach was turned down over the weekend.
The 26-year-old is expected to depart the Magpies this summer, following Anthony Gordon, a former Liverpool transfer target and childhood Reds supporter, who left St. James’ Park earlier this summer to join Barcelona.

With the addition of Andoni Iraola to replace Arne Slot and upcoming transfer market movements, Liverpool is making changes of their own ahead of the upcoming season.
Tonali was identified by former Liverpool player Carragher as a possible acquisition for his former team as they attempt to improve their midfield. Although the Reds are irritated by Inter Milan’s attempts to sign the 25-year-old, Curtis Jones may be leaving, and Alexis Mac Allister and Ryan Gravenberch’s performance following successful 2024–2025 seasons has raised concerns.
“Tonali is a midfielder I really rate,” Carragher stated on Sky Sports. “I think he’s got great pace and power in that midfield.”His previous season wasn’t his finest, but it’s challenging to play for a team that isn’t performing well.
“He is undoubtedly a player I considered for Liverpool. I believe that relocating to Tottenham would be a wise decision overall. In the meantime, Tottenham is taking action to make sure that the relegation struggle from the previous season won’t happen again.
Roberto De Zerbi’s team has already made an attempt to sign Marcus Rashford from United and Jan Paul van Hecke.
