The 2026/27 Premier League fixture list has offered an early glimpse into the challenges awaiting England’s top clubs, and Arsenal appear to have been handed one of the toughest starts among the title contenders.

Fresh from ending their 22-year wait for a league title, Mikel Arteta’s side begin their defence at home against newly-promoted Coventry City. However, the difficulty quickly increases with a trip to Aston Villa, followed by a home clash against Xabi Alonso’s Chelsea.

Arsenal’s opening five matches are completed by away fixtures against Brighton and Sunderland, two sides that secured European qualification last season. The demanding schedule could provide an early indication of whether the Gunners are capable of retaining their crown.

Rivals Given More Favourable Starts

Chelsea, meanwhile, have been given a more favourable start on paper, although Alonso will face a familiar challenge of quickly implementing his ideas while managing expectations at Stamford Bridge.

The Blues are among several major clubs entering a new era, alongside Liverpool under Andoni Iraola and Manchester City under new leadership. Manchester United will also look to build on the momentum generated by Michael Carrick following his permanent appointment at Old Trafford.

Compared to Arsenal, rivals such as Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester City, Tottenham and Manchester United have received gentler opening schedules, potentially allowing them to settle into the campaign before tougher tests arrive.

One standout fixture in the early weeks is the Manchester derby, which could significantly shape the ambitions of both clubs. Liverpool also face an emotional subplot, with Iraola set to return to Bournemouth during the opening stages of the season, reports Standard.

With Aston Villa continuing their rise and Tottenham strengthening aggressively under Roberto De Zerbi, the battle at the top looks set to be more competitive than ever. For Arsenal, the opening weeks may already determine whether their title defence begins with authority or immediate pressure.
