Zubimendi Explains Decision To Turn Down Liverpool

Martin Zubimendi has reportedly explained the reason he turned down a move to Liverpool last summer.

After helping Spain win Euro 2024 the month before, Zubimendi verbally agreed to move to Anfield, with the Reds ready to activate his £51 million release clause.

However, the midfielder then changed his mind and chose to remain at Real Sociedad.

Although Liverpool were naturally unhappy about the change of heart, they chose not to strengthen their midfield alternatives and instead went on to win a record-tying 20th championship and dominate the Premier League under new manager Arne Slot.

After turning down the chance to join Liverpool, Zubimendi has recently signed for Arsenal on a reported fee of £56 million, one of Premier League’s top team from the previous season.

“It wasn’t an easy time,” he says. “I wanted to stay at La Real, but when offers come in, you start thinking about your options,” Zubimendi said as quoted by Liverpool Echo.

“The first question I had to answer was whether I wanted to leave – and it wasn’t the right time. I felt La Real offered me more opportunities and that I still had a lot to learn, so staying was the best decision.”

Of moving to Arsenal, Zubimendi added: “It’s a different change for me. It’s the change I wanted. Since the first day I’ve been here, I’ve noticed the greatness of this club, and I’m adapting.”
