According to a report released today by MARCA, incoming Real Madrid manager Xabi Alonso wants to keep Luka Modric at the club for the 2025–26 season. Alonso has reportedly asked for a contract extension for the 39-year-old midfielder, believing Modric’s expertise will be an asset as he takes leadership of the team.
Alonso and Modric were teammates in the 2013-14 and 2014-15 seasons. Though Modric will be 40 in September, Alonso sees him as a key presence off the bench and a dependable midfielder who can play and be trusted in the majority of circumstances.

If Modric agrees to stay, Real Madrid may decide against signing another midfielder this summer. In his debut season as manager, Alonso would have a strong and diverse midfield corps to work with, including Aurélien Tchouaméni, Eduardo Camavinga, Dani Ceballos, Fede Valverde, Jude Bellingham, Arda Güler, and Modric.
Additionally, Los Blancos are believed to have four midfield targets on their summer shortlist as they aim to fortify the squad ahead of the new season. Real Madrid are now preparing for their final game of the season at the Santiago Bernabeu against Real Sociedad. Notably, the match will mark Carlo Ancelotti’s farewell.
