Xabi Alonso Breaks Silence For The First Time After Real Madrid Sack

Xabi Alonso has broken his silence following his departure as head coach of Real Madrid after a short and demanding spell in charge.

The former Liverpool midfielder left the Spanish giants by mutual consent on Monday evening, just days after defeat to Barcelona in the Spanish Super Cup final.

Alonso had only been in the role for around six months, having replaced Carlo Ancelotti ahead of last summer’s Club World Cup, reports Liverpool Echo.

Despite winning 24 of his 34 matches in charge, pressure mounted amid inconsistent performances and internal tensions at the Bernabeu.

Real Madrid’s decision brought an abrupt end to Alonso’s return to the club he represented as a player between 2009 and 2014.

Taking to social media, the 44-year-old admitted disappointment that his latest chapter with Madrid had not unfolded as hoped.

He thanked the club, players and supporters, describing the role as both an honour and a major responsibility.

Alonso reflects on Madrid spell amid Liverpool speculation

Alonso said he leaves with “respect, gratitude, and pride”, insisting he gave everything during his time in the dugout.

His coaching stint followed a highly successful period at Bayer Leverkusen, where he established himself as one of Europe’s most promising young managers.

Reports throughout the season suggested friction behind the scenes, which ultimately weakened his position.

The Spaniard has again been linked with a future return to Liverpool, where he remains a hugely popular figure.

Alonso was first touted as a potential Anfield successor after Jurgen Klopp’s departure in 2024 but chose to stay in Germany at the time.

Recent struggles under Arne Slot briefly reignited speculation, though Liverpool’s current unbeaten run has since eased pressure.

For now, Alonso’s focus appears to be on reflection rather than his next move, as he steps away from one of football’s most demanding jobs.
